Mumbai Trans Harbour Link
ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE SEWRI – NHAVASHEVA ATAL SETU (MTHL)
The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) has been constructed to facilitate decongestion of the island city by improving connectivity between Island city and mainland (Navi Mumbai) and development of Navi Mumbai Region and Raigad districts was envisaged about 30years back. Govt. of Maharashtra, vide G.R. dated 4th February 2009, decided that the project will be owned and implemented by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Earlier the project was planned as transport project. Govt. of Maharashtra, vide G.R. dated 8th June 2011, designated the project as Regional Development Project. This project will provide faster connectivity with the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA)
Project information: The project includes an approximately 21.8 km length of 6-lane (3 + 3 lane). The length of sea bridge is approximately 16.5 km, while the total length of the bridge on land is approximately 5.5 km. Approved Total Project Cost is ₹17,843Crore. The work was started in March, 2018 and completed on 05/01/2024.
Benefits of Project: The bridge is designed based on modern technology, which has reduced the possibilities of accidents. Moreover, travelers have a faster and safer route, making their travel experience more pleasant. The bridge has been contributed to the development of tourism in the city and surrounding areas. It has benefitted trade and industrial sectors, strengthening the local economy. By reducing traffic load, the Atal Setu has alleviated pressure on local roads in Mumbai, providing local residents with improved daily commuting.
The project has created lots of job opportunities during its construction and post- inauguration, which has improved the local economic conditions. The Orthotropic Steel Deck technology helps protect the flight paths of flamingos, minimalizing distractions to their natural habits. Noise barriers have been installed to minimize the disturbance caused to flamingos due to traffic, prioritizing their conservation.
Present Status: The project is Inaugurated with the Auspicious hands of Hon'ble PM. Narendra Modiji on 12.01.2024 and the Bridge is opened for traffic from 13.01.2024.
Since its inauguration and opening for public use on 13th January 2024. The Atal Setu has significantly enhanced regional mobility between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, reducing travel time and easing congestion on existing corridors.
